First JWST image of Jupiter, that was taken over two years ago. Crazy how time flies. If you'll look closely, you'll see Jupiter's ring! 🔭 🧪

With giant storms, powerful winds, auroras, and extreme temperature and pressure conditions, Jupiter has a lot going on. Now, the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has captured new images of the planet. Webb’s Jupiter observations will give scientists even more clues to Jupiter’s inner life. In this wide-field view, Webb sees Jupiter with its faint rings, which are a million times fainter than the planet, and two tiny moons called Amalthea and Adrastea. The fuzzy spots in the lower background are likely galaxies “photobombing” this Jovian view. This is a composite image from Webb’s NIRCam instrument (two filters) and was acquired on 27 July 2022. Happy National Coming Out Day, time to celebrate 20 years of this:

It’s me again! I’m sitting on the ground at the Chicago Pride Parade in 2004. I’ve still got the spark of youth in my eyes, a longer haircut, blue and white striped polo from Hollister, and jeans. I’ve also got a little Pride flag in my hand. It was a good day.

JWST's second image of Uranus. This image was presented today on AAS Nova (DPS 56: Day 3). 🔭 🧪

An image with a black background. The planet Uranus is a glowing orb near the centre surrounded by rings. The planet appears blue with a large, white patch taking up the right half. The patch is whitest at the centre, then fades into blue at it expands from right to left. A thin outline of Uranus is also white. Around the planet is a system of nested rings. There are faint orange and off-white smudges, some oval, some circular, that are background galaxies scattered throughout the image. Several bright blue point sources closer to Uranus are the planet’s moons. There is also a bright star at the left of the field, with 8 diffraction spikes.
