Counted Friday- this summer’s remnant western/Clark’s grebe nests from a colony we monitor. Amazing floating platforms. We had the water we needed this year, but the success rate of the nests was less than ideal. Extremely sensitive to disturbance, weather, and predators.

A mass of gathered aquatic vegetation piled into a mass and anchored to cattail stems. When finished and water is up, the whole nest floats.

Note that predators are a normal part of a functioning ecosystem, but their balance and actions can be thrown out of proportion by human activities.
