4. CENSOR (2021) It's so rare to see a film utilize the 80s and the VHS aesthetic for anything other than vibes or misplaced nostalgia, but that era and that format are integral to this tale of mental tape being worn-out to the point of being unplayable.
3. THE NEW YORK RIPPER (1982) Fulci crafts something that feels like a DePalma flick that's been left to spoil on a stoop. It oddly presages the latter's BODY DOUBLE, like some kind of repellant John the Baptist sounding the arrival of sickening celluloid.
2. IN A VIOLENT NATURE (2024) The terror that this landscape can produce is very much a part of the fabric of my being, which likely colours any Ontarian's viewing of this picture. I quite liked the dedication to both the genre and the chosen formalistic approach. Sick FX, too.
1. HOUSEBOAT HORROR (1989) Starting the season off with what is considered the worst Australian film ever made. Good and gory kills and a brisk pace make this WOAT pretty fun. Thoroughly enjoy that it is shot on video, while the music video they are shooting is shot on film.
