I know the argument is tedious but defining assault weapon is a tricky thing (I was refreshing my memory on what the Clinton ban included / excluded and it's kind of wild).

We have existing laws that make certain things very hard (but not illegal) to buy, like suppressors. Functionally it seems more straightforward to go down that route.
