interesting that in the early drafts tolkien considered a) making isildur (herendil) part of the fleet w/ elendil a hostage; b) drowning elendil 🥲; c) having isildur betray the faithful to save elendil; d) pushing elendil to renounce the valar to save isildur (thanks @bevtwomey.bsky.social!)

The way we have already seen Pharazôn (and Belzagar) asking Elendil to reject his beliefs, I wonder if it will happen again

Imagine Elendil in the water, drowning, ready to let himself go because he can’t handle more suffering, and Ulmo is trying to save him and with Nienna’s advise they let Elendil see Míriel one last time and she convinces him to keep going

When I read the Fall of Númenor I thought that a bit of this story went to Eärien's plot in the show and after watching season 2 I'm pretty convinced they took inspiration from here to make her character
