Cool picture from our cleanrooms for extraterrestrial materials at JAXA! Regular pencils and paper create too much dust, so the team use tablets or special shed-free "clean paper". Videos (which are often shared on their twitter @jaxa_curation) are taken with head cameras 📷 (credit: JAXA)

Photograph from inside the JAXA cleanrooms. Four people in PPE bunny suits are standing amongst the shiny metal equipment. One is tapping on a tablet with an electronic pencil. Another person is wearing a head camera.

In wilder discoveries of recent days, I found out that the Paris Fashion Week did a photoshoot on the "Space Exploration Field" at our JAXA campus, which is a 400-square-meter simulated lunar terrain used for testing exploration robots!

I’ve been at work all day and am still not back home yet. Casper is horrified by how downhill this place has gone. A poor yelp rating is coming my way.

Black and white shot from the balcony web cam this evening. A black and white cat is staring at the spilled food.
The cat is now sitting beside the spilled container looking confused.
The cat continues to sit, looking around in disapproval. You just can’t get the staff nowadays.

Japan has tanuki (raccoon dogs) that are decked out in the same burglar gear, but with dog-like paws. This… was the work of dexterous toes. And don’t they know it. I’d previously (but rarely) seen a solidarity raccoon on the balcony but never two: I had thought they were somewhat rare.

Black and white web cam image at night showing one raccoon sitting on the air conditioner, and the other tucking into the cat food.
The raccoon on the air conditioner is now stuffing itself behind the cat food dispenser. How it became over turned is now apparent.
The two raccoons feast on the spoiled container, that they could have eaten from perfectly nearly.

Not a catastrophe but a coon-astrophe! (See what I did there? It was epic.) Racoons are an invasive species in Japan, brought over in the 1970s by addicts to the anime, Rascal the Racoon: a story (both anime and reality) that ends with how raccoons cannot be kept as pets 🤦🏼‍♀️

Black and white nighttime image from the balcony webcam, showing two racoons bent over the spilled cat feeder.

People. Shocking news from the balcony cat cam this morn! I casually checked the images on the train to work (having apparently not looked out the window the whole time I was getting up) to find a scene of destruction! Casper the stray cat is looking scandalised! BUT WAS HE ALSO THE CULPRIT?

Web cam image of the balcony, showing a black and white cat sitting on the air conditioner unit staring down at a scene of destruction: the cat feeder has been over turned and the cat house squashed!

What we (really don’t) know about habitable exoplanets, the search for how our own life began on Earth, a how-to for not dusting asteroid grains when going through airport security AND my favourite exoplanet. A very fun chat with the Royal Institution ✨🔭🛰️🧪

Also, some of the tech coming down the VR-pipeline would be great as an AR overlay, such as face recognition (I am really terrible at that! I do better with voices) and automatic transcription and translation would be game changing for communication.

I actually like the idea of AR glasses, and the look doesn't bother me 🤷 I don't think the tech is *quite* there yet, but the idea of replacing my computer display with glasses, where I can change the size, number etc of screens to suit my current use and location it powerful.
