People who know about electric power: why are the NC/TN and VA/KY state lines so clear on this map? Hurricane damage doesn't follow state lines--do power grids?

Today I learned that researchers who wish to access Canadian microdata enter into a contract with the British monarch, whom the contract subsequently refers to as "Statistics Canada".

It's Sunday. I am NOT at work. 2 additional insights about what's going on the the CPS: (1) The threat to the CPS is the INTERACTION of declining response and flat (nominal) funding. When people are less willing to respond, it takes more time and effort per response--and staff time costs money.

Not my area of expertise at all, but whenever I hear about taxes and tips, I think of the summer I spent as a payroll clerk in Yellowstone National Park.

This is what I love about NBER Summer Institute on YouTube: I may never attend the economic history sessions in person, but I can still catch these fascinating presentations!

My first full CRS Report was just posted: "Measuring Wages in the Agricultural Sector for the H2-A Visa Program." crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/... I highlight a budget request to include farms in the OEWS program, and how this would improve wage measurement for the agricultural sector.

The first really substantial update I've made to a CRS product was just posted at crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/..., "Measuring Job Openings in the U.S. Labor Market" (The version on the website for Congressional staff has hyperlinks to the literature on this topic. Wish they were included.)

The paper I wrote with Matt Dey, using internal BLS microdata to describe concentrated labor markets in the United States from 2003 to 2018, has now been published at Industrial Relations and our market-level concentration measures have been posted for others to use. 1/14

I work from home on Fridays, so I just left my office without knowing when I'll be back. I hope this plant is still alive when I return.
