Pa. to register voters automatically, Gov. Shapiro announces

Everyone who goes to the DMV to get a new or renewed driver's license will be automatically registered to vote, unless the individual chooses to opt out, the governor said.

So how does this process work today? Do you have to actively register beforehand if you plan on voting? Why though 😅

I see they offer an opt-out as well.

So poor people who don’t drive won’t be registered. It’s not good enough.

When I worked on voter registration tech, PA was one of the hardest to integrate with. They actually had an API, but it was old and had convoluted access controls. Glad to see they’re improving on it! No one should have to “register” to vote, it should be automatic when interacting with the gov.
