Those who are turned are fewer and fewer in number, in recent years, but they do still happen. There's a real effort to help acclimate them "to the pack" though, so Travis is lucky in that regard. He gets a lot of support early on that makes the transition less scary :]

Travis gets turned by an accursed who shifts while drunk - they're actually the one to report that he's been turned the next morning, because they feel awful and don't know what to do, they just lost control :( He was just being nice in the wrong place at an unfortunate time.
