Explorative analyses suggested that being confronted with a message in a Eurosceptic newspaper instead of a non-Eurosceptic one negatively impacted EU attitudes, regardless of the content of the message. 7/7

These null findings are insightful in themselves, but our study also includes other important findings… 👉 Interestingly, a Eurosceptic connotation of a medium seems to increase negativity about the EU. 6/7

Our pre-registered hypotheses were not confirmed. Besides null findings for the direct effects, the analyses also did not show significant interactions with populist attitudes or the Eurosceptic character of the medium. 5/7

Informed by recent in-depth qualitative research, we also analysed whether this effect is stronger among citizens with more populist attitudes. Additionally, we tested if exposure through a Eurosceptic newspaper either aggravates or abates the extent to which the message leads to Euroscepticism. 4/7

Using a pre-registered original survey experiment conducted among members of a nationally-representative high-quality Dutch panel, we studied whether exposure to proposed abolishment of EU member states’ right of veto leads to more negative EU attitudes. 3/7

Previous studies and European referendum outcomes indicate that citizens are often wary of EU proposals diminishing national sovereignty. But do such proposals also increase negativity about the EU? 2/7 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
