The app has improved in recent years but still suffers too many paper-cuts - little niggles that if fixed, would make things significantly better. Another is the spinning “loading” delay when jumping between different podcasts. Or polluting the UX with “subscription-only” bonus episodes.

Have to agree. I’m Irish and visited the parent company outside Philadelphia (Bala Cynwyd) a few years ago, and was shocked to see they still had polystyrene cups in the kitchen. So 1980’s and Neanderthal!
Podcasts are just RSS feeds. You don’t need a separate app to listen to In Our Time. Try a few apps and see what suits you. On Android, try AntennaPod or Podcast Republic. On iOS, try the native app or Overcast, or PocketCast.
Personally, I’d go for a Lenovo ThinkPad, with an Intel GPU. The build quality is superb and the only thing that didn’t work was the finger print scanner (but I believe there’s a driver for it now and it should work). I had a T480 model.

Late to the game but…. I’ve been using Overcast for 6(?) years (and a premium subscriber) but have recently dabbling with the Apple Podcast App. Its main selling point is the ease with which I can find new podcasts. But that’s it. Everything else is painful. So Overcast it is!
