If you work in tech, sooner or later your age catches up to you. And it happens a lot sooner than you'd think. You stop being able to work long hours. Learning new tech gets harder. And meanwhile, every year there are millions of new computer grads who can do what you can for cheaper 🧵

You tell yourself, "Oh, it's okay, these n00bs have a lot of catching up to do." And you're right. At first. But these junior workers are hungry. They have the energy you lack, being older. And, above all, they're so. Much. Cheaper. And that's if they don't offshore your job🧵

"Learning new tech gets harder" has really hit me recently. Something about turning 50 has made me An Old and I get cranky when things change. What do you mean I have to learn a new interface? What was wrong with the old interface? It worked fine! (Narrator: It did not, in fact, work fine.)

If you're just getting started in tech and scoff at this statement... Holy fucking shit it's true. I burned out so hard the skeletons came out of my closet to do a musical number. I'm 33. I'm trying to reskill to something lower stress and it feels impossible.
