Imho, an authoritarian approach to fraud is a more immediate risk to science culture. The rewards for publishing lots, regardless of quality, has insidious long-term impacts though. Researchers who take time to hone their craft are passed up for those willing to cut corners for a long pub list 1/2

As the researchers with lower standards advance, they influence the culture of their institutions - further incentivizing quantity over quality. Over time, trainees are explicitly taught "this is how it's done" and bar drops a little lower and less scientists are trained well. 2/2
