isn't it bizarre that games often don't qualify for arts funding? like a game could easily have a screenplay writer, actors and a director, and a bunch of visual and audio artists and governments will be like "no this is for actual art like writing and tv and movies and painting"

I think that's a uniquely American thing. I've come across plenty of European games that mention some kind of national arts funding.

The Canadian Media fund gives money to games, including some ones that have gotten pretty big such as Dead by Daylight, the Long Dark, and We Happy Few! I do wish more of these funds would go for games though
