I don't think it spoils much. The audience should easily pick that up earlier than the mc's

Oh yeah. It does the Madoka thing where the contrast between the cutesy art style and the bleakness of the story sets the tone, but I think it does it a lot more subtly than Madoka. Iirc the pacing is pretty slow in the first few arcs but I feel like it pays off really well.
I almost never see anybody mention From the New World! I haven't seen it since it aired but it left a much stronger impression on me than most anime I've seen. I definitely second that recommendation and a lot of other ones on this list.
