Salvarsan was only used to treat syphilis. Sulphonamide, the forgotten first antibiotic, came along in the 1930s, preceding penicillin. Another factor was the discovery of role of codliver oil in preventing rickets (reduction in pelvic deformity with adverse consequences for childbirth).
