It's simply stories that incorporate gamelike elements. Have you ever played a video game and thought about how strange or interesting it might be to live in that world? Or to have rules from that world imposed onto ours? As far as recs, what are some of your favorite SF/fantasy reads?
I think "they" is likely popular because it's easiest for the reader. I used it, and for basically the same reason I usually have the people in my series make up descriptive names for the monsters, like bladetails and hellbees: it gives the reader less book-specific jargon they need to remember.
Oh, I'd agree it's LitRPG, but that's usually considered a subgenre of progression fantasy.
Ahhh, fair enough. Part of me wants to be like "Don't back down! Fight the haters!" but I've been online long enough to know we each only have so much emotional fuel to burn. ;) thanks for the response
