Side eyeing all the tech reporters who wrote “no your phone isn’t listening to you, companies are just really good at predicting your needs” articles. 😐
In a pitch deck to prospective customers, one of Facebook's alleged marketing partners explained how it listens to users' smartphone microphones and advertises to them accordingly.

I’ve had too many bizarre coincidences with Facebook ads after having verbal conversations about something obscure, then getting an ad for it.
and when folks were like "it's clearly listening!" they were all like "nuh uh!" god what a load of crock that everyone knew about. they were just towing the line.
Still unclear if this is actually happening though? it seems like it could be a case of a partner pitching something that is ultimately not enacted. Doesn’t feel like a smoking gun (but obviously great story)
I KNEW IT!
genuinely been scared to read this all day because i believed them when they said it! it seemed reasonable enough!
I stopped watching that doc about the dangers of being online that everyone was watching in the pandemic because it started off with some chud smugly dismissing that phones were listening to us
a few of them are still saying that, which suggests that no incontrovertible proof has been unveiled as of yet but also requires us to accept that a tech company wouldn’t use something that is more than theoretically possible to gain a competitive advantage
It’s good they’re finally admitting it but also why is this still legal
Maybe it's happening, maybe it's not. Who can say for sure? bsky.app/profile/tznk...
