Wildlife Diversity Program, in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Wildlife Branch, is looking for a Environmental Services Intern to join our team of dedicated wildlife professionals in their efforts to conserve California's bat species and to respond to the threat of White-nose Syndrome. The program aims to assess the population-level impacts of WNS through monitoring of bat activity and numbers through long-term acoustic monitoring and colony counts. The project also conducts surveillance for WNS and the fungus that causes it. This is a great opportunity to learn a broad set of skills such as collecting field data via video camera surveys and acoustic recorders; bat capture, handling, and sampling; processing data using autoclassifiers and code-management of large datasets; and learning about writing management reports and scientific publications.

This week I got to visit a SC coastal reserve and see the managed wetlands there. It was interesting to learn about the technology of water control features (known as trunks) that are used to adjust the amount of water to juuusst the right level at the right time for certain types of birds. 🌎
