I agree philosophically, but that’s not legally helpful when figuring out what’s best for a kid. The legal concept of parental rights assumes that parents are most likely to know what’s best for the child. This becomes less true as a kid grows but we assume as a society it’s true until they are 18.

Like I honestly think right wing folks are hijacking the phrase.

I don’t love “parental rights” as a phrase for it either but my understanding is that’s the phrase for the legal concept that gives parents latitude in (and the obligation to) care for their child.

It’s worth understanding that people who are abusive to their kids often wrongly think they’re doing it for their own good. Either you trust the state to compel parents in a direction or you give parents latitude in the hope that they’ll do a better job caring for their kids.

Part of “parental rights” is the right of parents to raise their kids without interference from the state, which is distinct from rights “over” children. For example, investigating parents of trans kids for being affirming is also a violation of parental rights. It’s a double edged sword.

This article is just incredibly stupid or incredibly dishonest.

This is maybe an interesting story comparing it to 2020 but then you’d also want to ask why Trump is struggling to hold onto white voters without a college degree.

Hypothyroidism for one. Most of the time very simple but definitely disabling if untreated. I have Ulcerative Colitis but mine was easily treatable and occasionally I have to go back on drugs if I have a remission. I don’t really consider that a disability but without the drugs… ouch.

I guess I was basing this off of the post that Dex was quoting about transition being 99% amazing and 1% annoying. But also, the vast majority of both research and everything I have heard from Trans folks indicates full social acceptance makes Trans people as able to function as normal people.

Exactly, my main point was that society, not technology, is the primary barrier of treatment for most trans people. We genuinely do not have effective treatment for chronic pain. I know doctors are horrible and opioids helped a lot of people, but it’s still only a fraction in the best case.
