The GFC essentially caused as debt was used to offset for the lack of annual wage rises since the 1990s. Tory voters basically grew up to believe that you didn't have to make trade offs and memory holed the GFC when they got bailed out by the central banks!

The problem is that as we move further and further along, UK companies and entities have made growing changes and have diverged increasingly from EU regulation. The longer time goes on the larger the gap and greater the effort to realign with the EU necessary.
