Data assimilation combines the results of proxy data and model results statistically to create a reconstruction that accounts for the biases of both. 2/7
The results show that in general, global average temperatures were higher than present for the Phanerozoic, with the possible exception of the Carboniferous icehouse between about 350 and 300 million years ago. 3/7
