Maybe it's difficult to pin down because what we're talking about is somewhat undefined in the first place -- tech authoritarianism? But IMO it has to do with the intersection of ridiculous levels of wealth and extremist ideas spread via online culture, which tech billionaires are knee deep in.

Tens of millions of American men think the same basic way. Ridiculous wealth and power just makes some of them more visible, and more able to preach and perhaps implement these "ideas." And also, it makes them even weirder. The "ideas" of course mean nothing, it's just mindless contrarianism.
