I actually support it being universal. It’s much less intensive to administer. Placing the administrative burden on people to prove they qualify would discourage those who need it and privileged white people would just get their accountants to hide their assets so it wouldn’t let to more equity,

Plus the thing that middle class people don't count owning a house as "wealth". So that $1.5m house will be exempt from calculations while a $50k kiwisaver fund gets your Super cut back

The thing is successive governments have made an active choice to invest in the future of it through the NZ Super Fund. It could choose to do the same for the whole population by increasing taxes and introducing new ones and then investing the proceeds in a fund, it just doesn’t want to.

We used to have a very similar thing to a UBI for families for almost 50 years so we know we can do it, they just choose not to because they're more interested in making the rich richer
