our society is becoming incredibly hostile to creative types who are extremely uncomfortable on camera
I've been a professional cartoonist for 12 years now and I still don't have a real "author's photo", despite being repeatingly asked to provide one for book fairs and conventions. Not gonna happen.
My 16yo is getting into Elliott Smith and he was so visibly uncomfortable on screen it is almost crushing to watch. We have long not known or cared how to put camera shy artists at ease.
THIS. SO MUCH. I don't want to be live to camera, hell I don't even really want my hands in the frame. I basically gave up on the food media work I was doing because I wasn't interested in pivoting to video content, and my visitor stream for social dried up because of it.
it's more than just being on camera, you have to be willing to be a character in your own work... I resisted this so hard, but it's critical to getting a lot of people interested in something they might not otherwise be
I've spent the last few weeks teaching a livestreamed course and it is ~e-x-c-r-u-c-i-a-t-i-n-g~ -- do not perceive me! perceive only the knowledge plz! Avert your gaze!
Unless you make being “mysterious,” “private,” or “reclusive” your Thing. But you can’t simply exist as a creative who wants to let your work speak for itself, you *have* to make it A Thing.
Pop musicians need to be good looking because I can only listen to music created by someone that I know is physically attractive.
i worked at a food bank some years back as a grant writer the director called me in for my annual review and said she was v happy with my work but that i should attend courses on emotional intelligence because i'd be bad on camera ma am i am a grant writer i hide in my hole and churn out copy...
I cannot be a booktok sensation because the idea of being on camera is terrifying.
there's not enough money in Elon's couch cushions to make me do something like that
