Guillotines are highly-specialized and hard to transport devices that require regular maintenance and a specialist operator - Have we grappled with the possibility that fetishizing the guillotine as a means of revenge against the elite is, in itself, an expression of rank elitism and classism??
But there is a certain tradition, ceremony, and spectacle involved with a guillotine that a simple bullet to the back of the neck lacks. Elitist? Maybe, but so satisfying. Besides, it keep Mme. Defarge off the streets.
It's also deeply racist, elevating as it does a profoundly eurocentric symbol of justice while ignoring the diverse and innovative methods historically used by non-white and marginalized peoples around the world to execute their own ruling elites.
more and more people are saying this
Also to make one that works well requires specialized skills and access to machines.
Is the lubricant for your guillotine free from animal products? Is the rope locally sourced hemp with at minimum 2% CBD content? Is the blade forged from recycled disposable razors, or is it upcycled from the plowshare from a nearby farm-to-table coop? Or do you just not care about the environment?
Honestly my critique of the terror is that it mostly sucked for poor to middle class french people. Guillotines arent classist because of their upkeep but classist because for every noble it hits it hits a hundred nobodies that experienced beef with a sufficiently petty and murderous counterpart
Aren’t we stealing good paying jobs from muscular, hooded executioners who can wield very heavy axes? Not to be a complete luddite, but automation y’know.
