Police would almost certainly LIKE to be the only people authorized to fly drones in U.S. airspace, as this debatably legal move by the NYPD highlights (what they do mean by ‘unauthorized’?). Unfortunately bans on Chinese drones - the only ones most people can afford - will help them get there.

The "danger" of a 250g drone crashing is a lot less than many dangers we face, legally, every single day. It's so silly. I dont want to live in a world where every inch of sky is filled with a buzzing drone, mind you, but we're pretty fucking far from that situation.

There's a drone show group on the rerun of AGT right this moment. So I am wondering how this anti-Chinese drone law might affect groups like that. 1000 drones is a lot of drones.

Even if you are part 107 certified to fly drones you can’t fly over a crowd without a permit and coordinating with the event planners. So like yeah this drone wasn’t safe. But the NYPD also pretends it’s illegal in the whole city when it’s definitely not.

The FAA act is a federal law. The supremacy clause means it preempts state and local attempts to regulate aircraft.

my understanding is you need a permit to fly a drone in NYC - www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/se... obviously you know WAYYYY more on this topic, just sharing from my research from when I bought a $35 drone on Amazon (if you recall.....it blew away and then I lost signal and it fell out of the sky)

the nypd shouldn't be allowed to use drones, they sure as hell shouldn't be crowning themselves the NYCAA

Just for kicks, neither the DJI Fly app or third party app Autopylot say anything about local permitting, so even a responsible flier would be relying on faulty information
