Danny Ayalon says Mr Netanyahu spent years actively boosting Hamas in Gaza in a bid to play the Islamist militants against the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and keep the territory divided.

I've been inclined to reject this story as conspiracy-bollox, but Danny Ayalon is a disturbingly credible, authoritative source.
