Nice piece about “Free to Be You & Me” and its impact, particularly on Gen X. I will say that it was a significant part of my childhood. I’m glad to see people talking about it. I still have that scratched up record. 🎧 www.nytimes.com/2024/03/09/a...

What “Free to Be” really told us carousel kids, though, was not just that women could have businesses or that boys could have Barbies. It was that no one else had the right to tell you who you are. This paired a deeply American statement of individualism with a universal kids’ declaration: You’re not the boss of me.

Most of this material was already available on the album version of “Free to Be.” But putting the project on ABC prime-time gave it to everyone. My blue-collar small town did not have a ton of Ms. subscribers, but we watched “Free to Be” on elementary school movie days. It was, like “Schoolhouse Rock,” part of our pop-culture curriculum.

I loved parts of Free To Be. My mom had excerpts on a reel to reel tape, I'm not sure why.
