Oh wow. I thought LaserDiscs were way later too. I guess it takes a while to develop something from a technology to a consumer product. And also I was a kid in the 80s so I wasn't paying that close attention to when these things were coming out
Yeah, the prototype Audio Compact Discs was physically larger than the current 120mm size CDs, and used 12-bit PCM with, um I think, 32MHz Sampling rate. There was also a 14-bit version and another sample rate. They were limited by the DACs available at the time and video recording bandwidth.
