Public Health Issues: How does SARS-CoV-2 (USA-1) compare to H1N1, in regard to increasing sensitivity to parkinsonian agents in a preclinical models? Our model predicts that those infected with both flu or COVID- 19 will have an increased risk for developing PD. For influenza (H1N1), we predicted an 50% increased risk of PD following influenza. Human retrospective studies showed a 73% Increased risk. Thus, if 2 out of 100 normally develop Parkinson's disease, we would predict that influenza (and that severe enough to cause hospitalization, would increase that to 3.5 out of 100. For COVID-19 (USA-1, the first wave) we predict a 150% increased risk, which is about 3 times that seen after flu, or on an individual basis, a risk 5 out of 100. Thus, on an individual level, the risk for viral induced PD is still not that great. However, according to the CDC 2.8 million people in the USA have been infected and recovered from by COVID-19 with 320,000 of them hospitalized. From these numbers …

Hypo-connected functional connectome edges. Network-based statistic (NBS) analysis indicated that the COVID-19 group demonstrated significantly lower functional connectivity compared to controls in multiple cortical and subcortical regions across the entire brain, especially the default mode network (mean t = 3.47 ± 0.36, range = 3.1–5.14, p = 0.033, FWE corrected, d = 0.92 to 1.5). The functional connectome is shown here as a graph with spheres representing nodes (regions) and lines representing their functional connections (edges). Nodes are colored by their membership in 1 of 8 functional networks evaluated (see color bar): 1: medial frontal, 2: frontoparietal, 3: default mode, 4: subcortical/cerebellar, 5: motor, 6: visual 1, 7: visual 2, 8: visual association (there were no significant differences in network 4). There were no regions of significant hyper-connectivity.
