Every anniversary I buy my wife a nice but practical gift that she can use day-to-day, she'll buy me something more thoughtful but mostly stuff I wouldn't use that ends up living in a drawer. Who's doing it right?

I’d say you, my wife, as lovely as she is, is hopeless at buying me presents, but don’t want to make her feel bad about it so have never said. Did finally say something to my son about it and it’s now our little in-joke.

Neither of you. Ask the other person what they want, or get them to set up a wishlist somewhere that you can pick from if you need to preserve an element of surprise. Never understood people who buy gifts they have no idea of the other person actually wants. So wasteful.

What does 'nice but practical' mean? A nice pen is a good gift. So are sunglasses, or a watch. High quality cleaning utensils are not good gifts.
