I know this shouldn't be taken seriously (literally?), but it illustrates a common misconception. You, regular citizen, are not more vulnerable to prosecution than a former president -- nor should you be! If you go into big-time politics, you should expect greater scrutiny.
That's exactly it. You will always have career criminals / envelope-pushers like Trump around. The way you keep them out of politics, in a healthy democracy, is that they know that a political career will attract the scrutiny that they know they cannot withstand. bsky.app/profile/seth...
About six years ago I wrote this piece about Trump's long career as a low-key criminal, someone who pushed every law just a little past the breaking point, confident that he could always wiggle out of trouble. Yesterday that came to a crashing end. open.substack.com/pub/sethcotl...
Anyone raised in a small town like I was probably recognizes who Trump is. He’s the ballsy guy who recognized in 2nd grade that the rules…
In fact, that's part of how we select criminals out of politics! The US has it badly, badly wrong in that respect.
Also, Trump and his alcolytes (of which Musk is absolutely one) keep saying "if Trump can be convicted of committing many, many crimes, then you can too!" Yes! That how justice system is supposed to work!
