I am not optimistic about Firefox, because apparently every realistic way of making money is unacceptable to its user base, and developing a secure useful browser is expensive. (No, individual subscriptions are not realistic. The finances are public, do the math. Capitalism sucks, yes, sorry.)

Probably some "Plus" subscription would work? At least to cover some expenses. But I have no idea what browser can put behind paywall... I guess their Mozilla VPN experiments are all about this.

The last time I evaluated Mozilla services/to donate there was a discussion that the CEO was earning ~7m a year. Since Mozilla is a nonprofit and money was always scarce this caused me to not donate as I don't want to fund this lavish pay. They now have a new CEO and I haven't checked for any change

Doesn't Google have a vested interest in Firefox existing, even without pay-for-placement, because otherwise Chrome would be a monopoly? Apple may also have some interest in the continued existence of Firefox, just so Google doesn't own the Web.

I quite like chrome but it does deeply, deeply trouble me how dependent everything is on it

Look guy, I contribute when I can. It’s a slog, for sure, but the alternatives are worse.

I hope they have a plan for when they lose the Google money

Perhaps they could introduce an "AI" button that charges people a dollar every time they click it?

Not only that, but the recent Google antitrust ruling may make deals like the one they have with Mozilla untenable, leading to a loss of the vast majority of the corporate revenue.
