Many welfare perfectionists make the same (to my mind) mistake, in saying welfare is the development, rather than the exercise, of virtues (or our ‘nature’). Getting less sick isn’t itself well-being!

Ah intersting, indeed. If I understand you correctly, I've been worried about a similar focus in my (previous) area of research, adolescent development, where there is a lot of emphasis on preventing harms, but much less on exercise of the good.
