The most insightful thing a drunk in a bar ever told me was “Punks are good people pretending to be bad ones, hippies are bad people pretending to be good ones”

It will be funny when they instead root for the team from that city of sexual deviance and drug abuse

Yeah. Think about the number of physicians’ and biologists’ concepts for designating health, and the much larger number for disorders. But it’s not only about the number of concepts. For any spectrum 0-n where there’s a good number or range (eg 98.6-ish), there are outcomes both too low & too high

There are many more ways to be uncool than to be cool. Aristotle and Tolstoy have the ratio in the right direction

The sad fact is that simultaneously the primary benefit and core moral responsibility of being a tenured academic is not the production of “impact” or “influence” out in the world but rather the ability to look at something you know about that’s shite and say “this is shite” and not lose your job.

Subjectivist theories of well-being explain how you can’t be alienated from what’s good for you. But virtuous activity is fundamentally first-personal—if you’re alienated from what you’re doing—you aren’t virtuous. Thus the Aristotlean view, well-being=virtuous activity, also explains this.
