CALL FOR PAPERS! ‘The high honour of sistership in her craft’: The Sociability of Scottish Women Writers, c.1782-1854 Abstracts welcome from ECRs and PGRs for this exciting symposium, co-hosted by Walter Scott Research Centre and Scottish Writing in the Nineteenth Century

23rd-24th Feb 2024 'The high honour of sistership in her craft' The Sociability of Scottish Women Writers, c. 1782-1854 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of Susan Ferrier's second novel, The Inheritance. Honouring this, as well as Ferrier's wider literary career, this in-person symposium invites papers from early career and postgraduate researchers that examine the literary friendships & networks of women writers who were active during Ferrier's lifetime. Recent re-evaluations of Ferrier's surviving letters have revealed that she was at the heart of a literary network with whom she exchanged manuscripts, recommended & discussed books, engaged in collaborative writing projects & traded support and inspiration. Building on these examinations, this event seeks to generate much needed discussions about the literary sociability of Scottish women writers of this era & illuminate the how friendships and communities played a significant role in their creative lives & practice
