50 years ago today(!), the first episode of my favorite anime, Space Battleship Yamato, aired on Japanese TV. Dubbed as Star Blazers for the US market, it combined an epic high-stakes story with surprisingly deep commentary on loss, hope, war, and peace. And influenced much which came after it. 🫡

The year is 2199. The Earth's surface has been decimated by radiation bombs from an unknown extraterrestrial foe. What's left of mankind has moved underground. The world war II wreck of the Japanese battleship Yamato rusts in a desert in front of the setting sun.
But the Earth has received a message from a mysterious ally outside the galaxy, offering a machine that can remove radiation and return the Earth to its former state, as well as plans for a warp engine to bring them there. Humanity's survivors convert the wreck of the Yamato into a massive spacecraft to attempt the journey.
But the journey will be vastly further than mankind has ever gone. Can a lone earth ship and her crew survive against unknown risks including traveling through the territory of a much more advanced enemy dedicated to destroying them?
Yamato must hurry; the friends, family, and the rest of humanity left behind on Earth only have one year left before the radiation takes its toll.
