At GSA for the week, struggling through awkward jetlag and trying to get class prep done but finding the time to do some learning.

A view of me, wearing a waistcoat, mask, and name badge, looking at a printed leaflet. A caption reads "never too old to learn about cool animals"
Me presenting the leaflet, which is called "cecil's guide to sea scorpions". The caption reads "fascinating creatures"

Student posters up and ready to go!

A poster on a conference poster board showing a large map and pictures of fossils alongside text. The poster title is "Early Evolution of Sea Scorpions: Eurypterids (Chelicerata: Eurypterida) of the Big Hill Lagerstatte".
A poster showing text, several graphs, and some pictures of trilobites. The poster title is "Growth variation and developmental sequence polymorphism in the middle Cambrian trilobite Elrathia kingii (Meek)".

West coast conferences result in unusual jetlag

A photograph of me, a white man with midl-length wavey hair and glasses, wearing a grey waistcoat over a white shirt and a facemask.

Chilly night in southern W.Va.

A view of a star filled sky, with an arm of the milky way faintly visible.

The most depressing thing about University Ranking Days is that it ignores the fundamental truth about UKHE: Every department in every university is full of outstanding and original scholars. Every. Single. One. What distinguishes between them are the systemic inequalities in which they work.
