I guess the thing that unnerves me so much is that Trump’s plan pretty much amounts to a promise of civil war but everybody seems to be behaving as if there’s no need to prepare for that horrifying contingency as long as it looks more likely than not that he’ll lose the election. Seems risky?

I think it’s hard to separate from 6 decades of GOP attacks on media. No one at the Times (or anywhere) recalls a time when conservatives weren’t wailing about liberal bias in the press. It is ingrained in the institution that deference must be extended to cons and criticism to libs.
