Today (6 Oct.) is Ivy Day, the anniversary of the death of Charles Stewart Parnell, the ‘uncrowned king of Ireland’. By tradition, a wreath is laid by An Taoiseach to mark the occasion. Read about Ivy Day here from @irishtimes.bsky.social.

The article, written by Frank McNally in “An Irishman’s Diary,” reflects on the history of “Ivy Day,” an Irish tradition commemorating the death of Charles Stewart Parnell, the Irish nationalist leader. Ivy Day was established a year after Parnell’s death in 1892, when the ivy leaf was formally adopted as a symbol of tribute to him. However, the gesture was not universally welcomed at the time, especially by supporters of Parnell’s rival, T.M. Healy. The controversy extended to religious institutions, where the wearing of ivy leaves by children was considered inappropriate or disrespectful.
Also noted is the criticism Parnell’s commemoration received from British conservatives, as well as the literary connection between Ivy Day & James Joyce’s short story “Ivy Day in the Committee Room.” The narrative blends historical reflections w/ light-hearted observations, including a critique of Joyce and the peculiarity of Ivy Day itself becoming a subject for literature & cultural debate.

By his own standard, Musk has forfeited the public trust.

Two tweets from Elon Musk:

For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally

“The paradox of his second period in Ireland, if that’s what it was, is that Litvinov was by then carrying 100,000 rubles, proceeds of the 1907 Tbilisi bank robbery, which he, Lenin, and Stalin all helped organise. But he probably did still need to work.” www.irishtimes.com/opinion/an-i...

Astonished at the numbers who turned out for our Sunday am history festival panel in Dublin Castle print works. Me & Mick Clifford having flashbacks to when this was the venue for the Flood Tribunal. Thanks to him, Caelainn Hogan, & Diarmaid Ferriter for making my questions sound intelligent.
