Capital punishment is a valid idea. The state reserves the right to levy execution for the most heinous crimes. However, it is invalid practice. None among us can trust that the conviction is so thorough as to warrant the taking of a life. Nor can we trust that the act itself will be humane.

or that it will be "fairly" applied and that only the worst of the worst (and all the worst of the worst) will experience it.
