Well, I kind of disagree here because I think the argument is not hardcore fan vs creative direction, it's hardcore fan vs lazy storytelling. The new SW trilogy was not disappointing because Kylo Ren could stop blasters with his hand. It was "Somehow Palpatine returned" that really pissed them off.
Killing General Snoke in the middle of the second movie revealing that he was not the main villain? No problem fuck him and his momma. Not setting up Palpatine's return in any way during the movies? Not developing Fin and Phasma characters? Rey being a Skywalker all along? Lazy. As. Fuck.
This isn't really what I was getting at. A more appropriate example using Star Wars would be the entire plot of Rise of Skywalker. It's a nonsense incoherent movie because it was made to appease a bunch of raging incels who were mad at the existence of women and black people.
