I know its a lazy way to talk about film when people are like "its like being on drugs 🤪" but that sequence specifically really felt like being zoned out and high and not really remembering how you transitioned into the weird headspace you're currently in. Really effectively dreamlike and surreal.

Yeah I'm kind of patching a lot of it together from absorbing bits and pieces of 90s Americana through osmosis and also just having heard a lot about the experiences of my trans friends. Still effective and horrifying, but I'm actively putting myself in those shoes as best I can

Like you say, not having that kind of just makes it difficult to connect to. I only really started feeling strongly for the characters around the midpoint when stuff began to click and by the end I cared very deeply. I think a second watch, with an understanding of the shape of it, would go better

Yes! This is a thing I've been struggling to articulate. I think the awkward editing and pacing in particular keep the viewer at arms reach a bit (which is at least semi-intentional) but it tries to counterweight it by bringing you in with this assumed familiar, nostalgic experience

Yeah I'd heard from a few people that it can be quite easy to bounce off it if the conditions aren't quite right. I watched it alone, late, lights off and phone away, and still found it a little abrasive to watch. I think that's by design? It's not entertaining, but it's compelling and effective.

I watched I Saw the TV Glow before bed last night and I still don't know if I actually like it, I just know I can't stop thinking about it. It's wild how a movie that doesn't even feel like horror for most of its runtime can suddenly become one so completely.
