I learned about cubical brown rot (a type of wood-decay fungus) in Robin Wall Kimmerer's book Gathering Moss. Brown rot fungi break down the structure of wood in such a way that it falls apart in roughly cubical pieces. I would guess that's what's going on here (Indiana Dunes S.P., April 2024).

A decaying tree on the ground, with marked straight line features in the rotting wood. New green growth also appears behind and in front of the log in this photo, which was taken in late April.

Quick lil sketch of a kākāpō-bear cub hitching a ride on her mother :> #wip#kakapobear

Colored sketch of a kākāpō-bear cub sleeping on her mother's back while she walks. They're both covered mostly in yellow-green feathers with dark brown markings and have beige faces and underbellies.

I think this poem by Laurence Binyon is just lovely #poem#poetry

THE HOUSE THAT WAS
Of the old house, only a few crumbled
Courses of brick, smothered in nettle and dock, Or a squared stone, lying mossy where it tumbled!
Sprawling bramble and saucy thistle mock
What once was firelit floor and private charm
Where, seen in a windowed picture, hills were fading At dusk, and all was memory-coloured and warm, And voices talked, secure from the wind's invading.
Of the old garden, only a stray shining Of daffodil flames amid April's cuckoo-flowers, Or a cluster of aconite mixt with weeds entwining!
But, dark and lofty, a royal cedar towers By homely thorns: whether the white rain drifts Or sun scorches, he holds the downs in ken, The western vale; his branchy tiers he lifts, Older than many a generation of men.

Mozilla’s system only measures the success rate of ads—it doesn’t help companies target those ads—and it’s less susceptible to abuse, EFF’s Lena Cohen told @fastcompany.bsky.social. “It’s much more privacy-preserving than Google’s version of the same feature.”

Mozilla is reinvesting in Firefox after letting it languish for years. But some of those investments may upset their community of die-hards.

Deleting biometric data after use does mitigate risks, but people always should be cautious about sharing it, EFF’s Rory Mir told Mashable. "You don't want your face print to wind up in a server permanently and [be] used against you in another context."
