One of the finest generals this country has produced. An incredible man to interview. It is not hyperbole to say that he prevented a war with Russia in the Balkans, when Wes Clark was determined to start one. I wrote about it here. authory.com/JohnBull/Pri...
Incredibly smart man, and brilliant to listen to. We were lucky to have him.
Have admired him for a long time. Knowledgeable, ethical and articulate with it.
You got to interview him ! Man you get all the best gigs. I read his biography when I was about 14-15 and I've still got it somewhere. Having family in N.Ireland it was an interesting read, some of it was fairly horrific to.
Awesome story - thanks!
Second in Command when the Paras murdered all those civilians on Bloody Sunday and present for the Ballymurphy Massacre too. Two things I suspect the obits in the UK press will omit.
I was entirely unsurprised that he would nominate Bill Slim for Radio 4's 'Great Lives'. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...
General Mike Jackson nominates Field Marshal Bill Slim, leader of the WW2 Burma campaign.
There are few commanders who have better understood both the rules of engagement, and how they affect the average soldier on the ground. He was a brilliant, and empathetic commander. Fluent in Russian, who recognised that NOT fighting and losing your men is a worthy goal.
