Today, on Juneteenth, if you are a descendant of a formerly enslaved person I invite you to take a moment to acknowledge, mourn, and cherish all it means. If you are a descendant of a people who benefited from slavery I invite you to explore what steps remain to address the legacy of that injustice.

A beautiful and useful thread. I was struck by the starkness of the initial categories - not only did ancestors of mine benefit from the existence of slavery, but I currently stand on their shoulders - continue to benefit. And some ppl are descendants of BOTH categories

I like the specification “benefitted from slavery” instead of focusing on slave ownership. My ancestor didn’t own slaves and was in principle against it, but he benefitted still in some capacity, was not abolitionist, and tolerated it including when negotiating with Southerners.
