Once he woke, or thought he woke, to Jamys crouched by his bedside, eyes shining in the dark. Watching him with unblinking focus, thoughts unknowable. It might have been a dream. Barret had been dreaming a lot, lately, though this hadn't the shape of either of his most common current dreams.
He woke again to a thin pale light. The skin on his back felt stiff and tight. His head ached.
Jamys was not in the second bed.
Barret's heart jumped in unreasoning alarm -- had they come in the night and taken Jamys without him knowing it? -- before he noticed the sheets and the bolster were gone too. A quick glance around the room showed them piled under the tiny barred window in a sort of nest, and one of Jamys' bare bony feet sticking out from the rumpled fabric.
Barret approached as quietly as he could. More of Jamys came into view.
He slept on his side, facing the wall. One hand curled, back resting near Jamys' mouth. The other thrown over his ear. His long dark lashes shadowed his thin chee
