The rule changes made me discover the Champions Hockey League and I must say it is a really enjoyable format and the hockey is very fun to watch. Highly recommended if you haven't already discovered it.

It will be very interesting to see how the CHL PP units lean in on this. I'm not sure how long the experiment will last, or if it will spread to other leagues, but it definitely be fun to watch it happen! And the quantification of the value of clearing the puck? A topic for perhaps another day.

With the CHL moving to a PP goal not ending the Power Play, but instead scoring a goal short-handed being the event which ends the penalty, Connecticut would would have feasted on those new rules.

Connecticut was the very embodiment of the power kill. Particularly notable was that Connecticut scored goals while on the PK (one goal per 968 seconds) at almost the same rate as Montreal did while on the Power Play (one goal per 908 seconds). Crazy numbers.

Especially notable is Connecticut's PK. Near the bottom of the league defensively, but what definitely has to be factored in is how lethal they were in scoring short-handed goals. Here's the assessment for PK, but instead of Goals Allowed on PK, we use Net Goals Allowed

The same metric is obviously available for the penalty kill units, again measuring how many goals per 2 minute of PK time.

The ordering largely stays the same except for Boston, whose power play appears to be undervalued by measuring by the simple percentage calculation.

As a baseline, for the traditional method of measuring power plays, the PHF was 16.4% and when measuring goals scored per 2 minutes of power play, the PHF league average was 0.198.

Similarly, a power play which fails to score on a 5 minute power play is treated the same as failing to score on a 2 minute power play. So what if we measured instead by goals per 2 min of power play? (Or how many seconds of power-play time was required for each goal scored?)

Also, the traditional measure is skewed by shorted penalties when one team takes a penalty while on the power play. If the penalties happen 10 seconds apart, for example, the accounting for each team will be the same for the 10 second power play as if they each had a full 2 minute power play.
