PVC foam sheeting is a cosplayer's best friend. You might be able to build a shell around the parts of the gun you need to change while leaving the parts you don't exposed.

It's my kid's so I can't do any permanent changes, but I might look for something I can use the sheeting on. Thanks for the tip!
